Participation in Seven Hills Shul

Our congregation is affiliated to the Movement for Progressive Judaism and shares its core values. Seven Hills Shul is supported through a combination of membership contributions, donations, modest income from events and careful stewardship of funds already held by the synagogue. These contribute to the costs of running services and maintaining our wider programme of events and activities. As is the case in many small congregations, our overall costs are greater than our regular income, and we work hard to keep events and activities accessible while remaining financially sustainable. Membership contributions help to cover part of the cost of organising and running them, and to reduce losses we usually invite non-members attending events and taking part in activities to make a donation if they can. We typically ask for £10 per event, although smaller contributions are always welcome.

Membership

Our services are open to both members and non-members, but membership provides admission at reduced rates to special events. Membership is not just about the benefits to you; it is a commitment to the continuation of the progressive Jewish community in Sheffield.

Full membership is open to anyone who meets the criteria for Jewish status as determined by the Movement for Progressive Judaism according to the Reform Beit Din and shares our values.

Associate membership is open to Jews; people who do not meet the criteria for Jewish status as specified above; non-Jews who would like to be associated with the congregation, such as non-Jewish partners; and people who are considering converting to Judaism or already undertaking a conversion course.

Membership contribution rates can be found in the Guidance Notes. Payment is due on a calendar year basis, pro rata for members who join during the year. Some members make additional donations, for which we are most grateful. Many members pay by regular standing order. Our policy is that no-one should be prevented from becoming a member due to inability to pay. Our treasurer is willing to discuss reduced contributions for those with limited incomes.

If you would like to join us, please contact the membership secretary at membership@shef-ref.co.uk or leave a voice mail with your contact details on 07719 209259, making clear that your enquiry is about membership. We will then ask you to complete a membership form. There is no need to send any money at this stage. You will be asked to make your membership contribution once your membership has been approved.

Donations

If, for any reason, you do not wish to apply for membership (perhaps you are visiting for only a few months, or for any other reason you do not wish to take up membership) you might consider sending a donation to our treasurer (you can find out how to do this by emailing treasurer@shef-ref.co.uk) or leaving a voicemail on 07719 209259.
